Our Past

West Gate Baptist Church is a pillar in the Town & Country Community. We have existed since October 10, 1959, when Rev. Gerald Cheney had a dream to see a church started in our community that had a heart to reach the world. Since 1959, West Gate Baptist Church has had it's ups and downs, but the dream of Rev. Cheney has always been unchanging and undimmed.
In 1988, West Gate Baptist Church called Dr. Bruce Turner from Holbrook, MA. to be their pastor. Pastor Turner was used of God to start a church in the greater Boston area, and in fifteen years to see the church grow to over 300 adults meeting each week. When Pastor Turner came to West Gate, the church found itself in a time of great difficulty and hardship. Pastor Turner loved the people and recommitted the church to the original dream of Rev. Cheney, to reach the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Since then, West Gate Baptist Church has been used of God to reach the Town & Country area, Florida, and the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ. West Gate supports over sixty missionaries in the United States and across the globe.
For over thirty-five years West Gate has been giving young people a solid Christian education through the ministry of West Gate Christian School. In 2005, through the leadership of Pastor Turner, Florida Baptist College was launched and has been training young men and women for full time Christian service around the world. Most recently, West Gate Baptist Church completed an additional 10 acre campus which includes a new 1456 seat auditorium, college classrooms, administrative offices, nursery facilities, and much needed parking. At West Gate Baptist Church, we believe that the best years are still ahead as we seek to win the world to Christ.
